Rough Customer

The dead rabbit's lookin' damn good! My only thought is to just dirty him up a little more. Like this...ish:

Other than that tiny thing, I think it's looking freakin' awesome! Nice!

Where would we be without shakes?

What would our film look like if we didn't have shake? Something like this:

And here we are in the land of dystopian green. There's a few errors to address pointed out in the image below...

...now comment, you bastards!

Deglossed around the edges

Here's a new version: better reflections, slightly dodgy AE comp instead of Shake... Animation isn't quite as embarrassing this time...

Refined rendertest...

Shadows need to be tweaked to an agreed level. This is much less on the stylized purple, more to a darker blue.

Bugger'd hand and dodgy textures fixed too. Reflection now only on the outer gloss at about 0.2 reflectivity. Shiny.

H264 compression washes out the colour something fierce.

Rendertests engaged...

Prepare to be marginally amazed:

Shot 32 rendertest.

Whatcha think?

This render took about an hour and a half for 130 frames, split into:
1 background beauty pass
1 background amb occlusion pass
1 sky texture a la Brad
130 character beauty pass frames
130 character amb occlusion frames

There's 1 directional light for key (colour white, intensity 1,) fill (80% grey,) rim, shadows (raytraced, 1 degree, 5 depth)... and 1 omni for a little face detail (0.2 intensity, specular on, shadows off).

I don't have any clever naming conventions or path structures yet, but in theory this is gonna work quickly and painlessly. Comp'd in Shake with a bit of blur and distance fog.

W00t!

ALSO!!
Watching this at the proper framerate, I realise this particular animation sucks some serious testicles. I'll be redoing a lot of animation and religiously playblasting - just to get it absolutely perfect.

And Neil, check out his wrist. We'll need to repaint those weights a little, I know Orange has something with his finger too...

Blast!

Another explosive experiment. This one I just stole from the Visor. Looks cool though.

Another explosion test.

OMFG Aliens!

Ah, lol...

If rabbits could fly...

Experimenting with some clever distortion and stretching techniques, should we decide to make the animation even wackier. Then I got carried away with photoshop.

Yeah, that was too much fun...

Explosmnimation.

Like I said earlier, I now have Maya.

To celebrate, here's an explosion.

Explosm mark 1.

More Music

Hey guys, Bob's sent me another musical iteration. I've got some thoughts, but I wanna hear what you guys think first.

Have a listen: here.

Camo?

This is my hat in the ring regarding Camo on the rabbits. I'm a little iffy either way. Brad was right that it does make it a little busy, but by the same token the plain orange might be... well, too plain.

Ideas?

One idea later, this is what happened. Brad suggested that the bigger camo-style shapes work better, and perhaps take it down 30%. I took it a step further and took it down to 50%... 30% looked too similar.

Legging it

Leggy run cycle

Modeled, rigged, textured and animated in 2 days. Given, it still needs to be tweaked and fixed, but not a bad effort I thought.

Yes, there are still some dodgy paint weights. Yes, there's a seam along the inside of his pants. Work in progress...

It's not supposed to make that noise...

I've done some fixing of the orange rig. You don't realise how broken something may or may not be until you start using it. Good thing I did too, I didn't want to come across these problems later down the track...

So Orange is fixed, and I did an animation from the 11 second club with him today. From the new Dr. Who methinks...

More Musicianshippleness

So here's a new music iteration. I've edited the animatic slightly as we discussed, but nothing major has changed. I doubled the action sequence to make space for any fancy animation we may want the space for.

Which is all sort of redundant... the codec compression screwed the visual timing somewhat. But the music is still good, so shuddup and listen!

Te(st/x)ture

Hopefully this image is pretty self explanatory. Hopefully it will be a high enough resolution to read.

Look good? Oh yeah, and this is rendered with a single directional light with raytraced shadows. Win.

Had a little time to slap down some colour...

Your thoughts on the stages of colour through the film?? Just did a quick colour layout before bed. God damn im tired!

Musicianshippleness

Some quick themes and ideas. I listen to it sometimes and it's a bit funny, but then I listen to it 5 minutes later and it fits really well.

Need sleep.

Watch movie.

Nuff said.

Sketchy sketchy sketchy

So. Here's the world's roughest animatic. I knew there'd be a good reason behind doing this, and a lot has to do with the sort of music we'll have at certain points. Needless to say I'll be watching plenty of action comedies for inspiration...

My version of the storyboard trims down to 2:20 without any soundtrack reference, just going by what feels good. On and off I was listening to some of our inspirational songs (which I have more of btw), but there's no real continuity in listening reference.

I think this gives my idea across better than my disjointed storyboard did, so I'm really interested to hear what you guys have to say now that I at least think it's coherent.

First Render Test

I thought I'd better back up those lofty claims I made today about how easy it will be to work with 3D characters and 2.5D backgrounds. Here's an experiment with my emotional walk cycle from last year and a roughly chopped up version of Brad's story beat thing:

Click here to see it @ Vimeo.

His feet slip a little, and the picture will have to be planned better for the shadows to work properly, but I remain confident. Not a bad first shot at all.

GAZE INTO THE LENS FLARE!!
