First Render Test

I thought I'd better back up those lofty claims I made today about how easy it will be to work with 3D characters and 2.5D backgrounds. Here's an experiment with my emotional walk cycle from last year and a roughly chopped up version of Brad's story beat thing:

His feet slip a little, and the picture will have to be planned better for the shadows to work properly, but I remain confident. Not a bad first shot at all.

GAZE INTO THE LENS FLARE!!

  2. That was:

-A little bit of simple lighting in maya. Just flat textures with no specular highlights for this example.

-Shadows rendered on a plane with useBackground texture applied. This was just a test, but we'll need to plan for shadows when we make our scenes.

-Brad's concept thingy diced and re-painted here and there to create a matte & a few layers. Note the bit of crap sticking out of the ground that he walks behind. The background moves slightly, just for fun.

-Lens flare from After Effects. We can use AE for some cheap smoke and background explosions or something. Great for making atmosphere and rain and the like.

...and it WAS quick and easy.
Don't worry about the foot sliding thing. That's an animation problem, not compositing.
